Burning Oil Empty Burning Oil

Post by joel352 Tue 5 Nov 2013 - 23:16

Well my bike is going away for winter and im going to be messing around with it for the next few months but there is one main issue.  My bike is burning oil and in the space of 600 miles it has gone from the top mark to the lower mark on my oil check window thingy. And it has got worse as well.
Since I have fitted the carbon Akrapovic the oil burning has started. I noticed it was dropping when I checked every week but it has got worse. Today I fired it up and the idle was very poor and it just wanted to stall and when reved to give it a bit of throttle hoping it would solve the low idle thingy it threw white smoke out like crazy.

Now I haven't checked the spark plugs yet but im guessing there will be some oil fowling on them. Why would my Akra cause my bike to burn oil all of a sudden. Mad

Also I am saving up to buy a GT125 for some winter riding adventures as insurance is cheaper that I thought. Razz  You carnt get rid of me yet.

If oil is going into the cylinders, it's getting there one of three ways.

The top. Down through your valve stem seals.
The side. Head gasket.
The bottom. Piston rings not doing their job.

Is it more smokey when hot or cold?

Carnt exactly tell as such. Tryed firing it up the other day and it would not idle at all and just stalled. Lot of smoke was produced then. Then 2 hours later it was fine. But when running hot its running rich but no smoke. And when its cold I carnt tell the differance between smoke and condensation.
But bikes in colin appleyards at the mo as suzuki have recalled all GSXR bikes from k4 to L03 for a front master cylinder so I havent had chance to play.

Lots of smoke pretty much rules out a dribble through the valve seals.

No smoke when hot means it's probably not the head gasket.

Lots of smoke at startup and inability to idle would suggest reduced compression consistent with piston ring failure.

Well its a big job for me to do even if I do it over winter if its piston rings. Bike needs some new stearing head barings and a service next year anyway so I might get someone to whip it apart and replace some stuff in or will it be all right runnig it in its current state. Also why would it of all of a sudden started when I put the carbon Akra on ???

Assuming it's a piston ring, it should be fine to run on for maybe a thousand miles or more, at the moment the only damage you're doing is to the inside of your cylinder bore (your engine block is already trashed by this point, sorry) but you do risk the piston grabbing the bore, jamming, and wrecking your conrod, big end, crankshaft, crank bearings, engine casing, gearbox, and the rest of the bike too if the lock-up causes you to crash at high speed.

But it's hard to say for sure if it'll happen or not. I've seen well-engineered cars with faulty piston rings smash themselves to bits in a matter of a few days, and I've seen a Chinese 125 motorcycle burning oil so much that often it was run with no oil at all, and yet even without proper lubrication, continued to run every day of the week for over a year.

Be lucky!

Well as appleyards have it I have told them the story and they say it isnt smoking at all hot or cold and they cannot fault it. They say it smells rich when ideling when its hot so dont know if it is that that is burning oil. They cannot see any oil fowling on the spark plugs and without stripping the bike they dont think there is a fault. He said the difference between then higher and lower mark on the GSXR is so little that if you work it out it would be in the acceptable range.

So now I dont know what to do.

You should relax!

I was working with "idle was very poor and it just wanted to stall" and "threw white smoke out like crazy" but if it's been looked over by a mechanic and they think it's okay, then no worries.

The Suzuki GS engines are about as durable as an engine can be without having "HONDA" on the casing.
