Gear Issues Empty Gear Issues

Well im having gear box issues. Second gear whines and so does 4th and is getting worse. Nobody knows what it is until the engine is out and stripped down to basics.
Does anyone know any decent bike shop that can do this without charging me a small fortune for labour.
Appleyards is getting me a quote for a straight up job and already we are looking at £800.
