On Hyosung Build Quality Empty On Hyosung Build Quality

Post by Cloud. Sun 12 May 2013 - 2:02

I've worked on all kinds of things, from massive Perkins diesels, to tiny glow-fuel 1cc radio-controlled things.

Some things have stood out as being rubbish. An old Austin Montego comes to mind, though I'm sure there's been worse.

My last project was to do a total rebuild of a Yamaha Virago, some of you may know. I did a fine job on it, I managed to double the original top speed through various power and performance upgrades, modifications, and fabrications. I then proceeded to abuse it, day-in, day-out, with no maintenance whatsoever, until, like any machine under that kind of pressure, it eventually stopped - for no reason, I might add. I've had the engine out and there's nothing wrong with it. The eternal frustration wasn't with my own abilities, but with the source material.

I like my stuff built tough. If it's not overkill it's not enough. People can wax lyrical about Japanese build quality all day long, but the fact is this; the Virago is bollocks. Ever since I got it, it's felt dainty and fragile. I just assumed it was quality and precision, where my previous bike was a neanderthal chunk of blunt engineering. But having rebuilt it, it always left me feeling like it was designed and made with what will do, rather than what will really last. As a result of that, it broke. Lots. That's why I was always upgrading and tuning, each part that broke gave me the opportunity to improve.

Now, while some stuff has stood out to me as being crap, there's never really been anything that's been outstanding for being much more fit-for-purpose than it needs to be, that is to say, nothing comes up to my personal standards for hardcore overkill. Aside from a BMW M10 engine, and a few other bits and bobs, but rarely a complete machine. The GT125R though, just for light servicing duties, I've had it undressed, stripped of wires, the exhaust off, a cylinder head off, rebuilt the rear swingarm assembly, and done a bunch of little things, and every time I'm properly impressed by the quality of manufacture and material. Aside from the silly chain the 125 gets, which I'd upgraded within days of owning the bike, the stupid plastic tab things that keep the fairing together, and the weak front lamp. Everything else has been surprisingly good. It's solid, and it feels like it was designed to cope with what you could do to it, rather than just what you should - because we all like to push the limit sometimes.

Almost everything I've worked on, it's because I've had to mend, or felt the need to improve, faults or shortcomings with things. Now that I've fixed all the reasons why I got my Hyosung cheaply, it's so good, it's left me with nothing really to do. Nothing to improve or reinforce. It's such a nice thing to work on something that's built properly, that I almost want to work on it just for the sake of doing so. But it's nice knowing that I don't have to.

Nicely put. If some people who slag off hyosung got there hands on one and went through evey piece of the bike I would think they would be impressed. Like I have always said give it 7 to 10 yeas and I bet hyosung will get the recognition it deserves and it will be compeating up there with the big boys.

The only things I think they should improve on is lights, elecys and put the bikes on a bit of a diet. I think the GT250R should become a GT350R for the new licence requirements now as 27BHP seams to be a little under powered compared to the ninja 300 at 40BHP. If they boost it to 350cc and get 40BHP out of it then it will be definately giving kawas and other bike companies that make quarter litre bikes a run for there money.

Nice sentiment Joel but what a lot of people don't realise , is that Hyosung have been making motorcycles since the late '70's ............... I've seen GT125's on '03 plates and the 650 goes back to '04 , so they've had their 10 years Neutral

Don't think it will happen mate , especially when Hyosung seem stuck on such a small product range and only minor updates every couple of years Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Hyo need to look out and watch their back and their market!
I was at the BMF rally this weekend and out of interest got talking to the guys on the WK Bikes stand Embarassed .

Their bikes were pretty good and I got the impression that they see Hyo owners as a target market.
Why?, because we have already demonstrated the willingness to try a different/new brand.

Hyo (imho) cant afford to think they command a brand loyalty in this country yet.
I still think they have a long way to go when it comes to customer support/service/spares/network.

I include the importer in that statement.

I love my Hyo , but that could change in an instant if it went wrong and I cant get the parts to fix it because the importers/hyo don't support their products.
After all a good machine sitting on the sidelines because of a small problem is still useless and wont get you anywhere.

I don't know if it is true or not , but the rep on the WK Bikes stand was telling me that they are getting spares in place before putting their products on the market?
Is there even an official importer of Hyo spares?

EDIT : a 350 Hyo with just a bit more pep? Smile ..................Hmm sounds good.

With the spares there is no current importer for parts. When I rang startrights they said as barrus are no longer importing hyo startright are buying what ever they have left at barrus. When they are gone they are gone untill a importer takes over.
That is why im looking at buying a dif bike like the GIXXER than a hyo coz if I get a new one and it breaks and I carnt get warrenty parts then im up shit creek.

PS I do like the sound of a GT350R.

PSS I would be buying a Hyo if a importer is set up and can get them in. Its not because of getting the 2013s in the UK thats the issue its supporting the 2013 with the parts.

WK are also supposed to be running one of their 650's in the Lightweight TT in a couple of weeks under the sponsorship of TsingTao Beer ...................... Cool Cool

I've seen the WK bikes and they are smart looking pieces of kit ............ and YES , I would be tempted , IF , they used a more powerful engine ( the WK is around 10 BHP down on the Hyo Shocked ) ...............

I want a second bike for touring two up and the WK650TR would be perfect if it had either a BIGGER or MORE POWERFUL engine Wink

Apart from that , I agree with Pepperami ......... WK seem to have the right idea Cool

As for Hyosung spares ..... guess I'll just keep buying from abroad or online like I have from the beginning Smile

That is if Hyo spares don't become hard to get with all the civil unrest in Korea Shocked Shocked

Hyo want the likes of us to buy their products?
Maybe they should be doing a bit more to support us to continue with their products?.

I have actually found a 250 four stroke that I like and I have to scratch around for spares Mad that`s sad and it shouldn't be like that!
I will be soooooo cheesed off if I have to give up on my GT 250 efi because Hyo cant be bothered with us here in the UK Evil or Very Mad

Mind you I also like MZ`s & Jawa`s and Honda Superdreams? so maybe I`m a bit odd and Hyo`s are odd as well Very Happy .

You think getting spares for a Hyo is hard? , try getting parts for an old obscure Jawa!! Shocked

I really don't know about the WK. There are Australian reviews but lets just wait and see how the bike looks with a few English seasons under its belt! Lets face it , the summer bikes are out and there's hardly been enough time to wash the salt off the roads here! Hyosungs have stood the test of a few seasons in UK. I will be interesting to see how the WK fairs under similar circumstances. On the face of it, the bike looks competent. we will no doubt find out what it can really be like soon enough.
